The Order of Perpetual Indulgenceis collective in its decision-making and anarchist in its practice. The members meet regularly at informal 'nuncheons' and their membership reflects the wide variety of beliefs, philosophies and ideologies that are present in the Gay and Lesbian community and movement. There are radical faeries, marxists, christians, atheists, haute couture, and gourmet members, and members that don't listen.

The good work of the order includes officiating at rites of many kinds: marriages; exorcisms of unwelcome demons from buildings, institutions and personages; exhibition openings; hospital visitations; house blessings; book launchings (for publications bearing the imprimatur or nihil obstat of the Order); umpiring for sporting events; safer sex education and any event where the Order's message is permitted to be proclaimed without hindrance or censorship (and elsewhere at every opportunity); and fundraising for worthy causes.

The Promulgation of Universal Joy is a mission which the Order tries to carry out personally and collectively as an antidote to the oppressive effects of gender roles and behaviour forced upon women and men in our society. The Order tries to exorcise the gloom of conformity and 'proper' behaviour from our own lives and the lives of others.
Stigmatic Guilt is the effect of centuries of scapegoating of gay people. In a way similar to that in which women were made to feel less than human because they are women, so gays were made to swallow lies about themselves. The stigma attached to being gay or lesbian brought its own brand of guilt and self oppression, and still does. The Order wants to expiate this on behalf of lesbian and gay people.

Habitual Manifestation means that our members show forth their vocation whenever people gather, but most of all in the market place. They do not always wait for an invitation. The most direct means by which the Order expresses this public ministry is by the wearing of the Habit, and the perpetration of their presence wherever and whenever appropriate.

Perpetual Indulgence is both a name and a way of life. The christian church has granted, and still grants, indulgences to its members, freeing them from the 'temporal punishment of sin'. The Order of Perpetual Indulgence, in a similar way, desires by thought, word and deed to do the same. The Order claims, for gay people, a perpetual indulgence from self-punishment, guilt and despair. It is the Order's earnest wish by that banishing the self-indulgent scruples of the closet, we can come to work more effectively to bring about change that is good, and keep our sense of humour at the same time.
