As its name implies, the martial arts school of Intuitive Archery teaches the use of the bow. It is an “internal” school, meaning that it concentrates on harnessing the flow of one’s life force to achieve complete control over oneself — and since the bow is an extension of the self, this control enables masters of the school to perform remarkable feats of archery. But such feats are secondary to the purpose of the school, which is introspective in nature: its deepest teachings emphasise that perfecting one’s skill is simply a metaphor for the journey towards enlightenment. A true master cannot be deceived, because she knows herself, and in so doing, knows her enemies.

Intuitive Archery is ancient, and yet the school is taught in no academy. Most of its masters are loners, who prefer to wander the land in quiet contemplation. Hence there are few students; it’s hard to find a master, and harder still to convince him or her to impart the secrets of their art. The school is thus slowly dying out, and it may not be too long before it becomes entirely extinct.

Intuitive Archery Mastery

Prerequisites: Lawful alignment, Called Shot (longbow), Improved Aimed Shot, Instinctive Shot (longbow), Point-Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Weapon Focus (longbow), 10 ranks in Concentration. Must convince an existing Intuitive Archery master to take you on as a student.

Training benefit: When you make an aimed shot with your bow (see the Improved Aimed Shot feat for a description of this action), you gain a +20 insight bonus to your attack roll, and you are not affected by the miss chance that applies to attacks against a concealed target. You may use this ability once per day.

Social benefit: Students of this school are on good terms with most contemplative orders. You gain a +2 circumstance bonus on Diplomacy skill checks when dealing with monks and lawfully-aligned divine spellcasters.

Intuitive Archery mastery is a prerequisite for taking the Master of Intuitive Archery prestige class, detailed below.

Special Abilities

Weapon and armor proficiency: The master of Intuitive Archery gains no weapon or armor proficiencies beyond what she already has.

Greater Mastery (Ex): With dedication comes rewards. The master of Intuitive Archery can now use her mastery training benefit a total of once per class level per day. She can only use this benefit once per round, even when hasted or in conjunction with Finding the Target (see below).

Superior Called Shot (Ex): When the master of Intuitive Archery makes a called shot, she deals an extra +1d8 points of damage. Creatures immune to critical hits (including undead, constructs, oozes, plants and incorporeal creatures) are not subject to this extra damage, and any item or ability that protects a creature from critical hits (such as armour with the fortification special ability) also protects from this extra damage. Since a called shot cannot be made in conjunction with Manyshot, this extra damage also cannot be combined with Manyshot.

The master of Intuitive Archery's damage bonus from her superior called shot increases by +1d8 every two levels.

Ki Shot (Su): At 2nd level, any arrows that the master of Intuitive Archery lets fly from her bow gain a +1 magical enhancement bonus to attacks and damage. This doesn’t stack with any enhancement bonus that the arrows may already have, nor does it stack with the Imbued Strike feat (if the master has that feat).

Instinctive Strike (Ex): At 3rd level, the master of Intuitive Archery gains this feat with her bow, if she does not have it already. She gains the benefit of the feat even if her bow is one that doesn’t normally allows a Strength bonus to damage.

Improved Precise Shot (Ex): At 4th level, the master of Intuitive Archery gains this as a bonus feat, if she does not have it already.

Finding the Target (Ex): At 5th level, the master of Intuitive Archery can make a called shot with her bow out to its first range increment.

Still Mind (Ex): At 6th level, the master of Intuitive Archery gains this as a bonus feat, if she does not have it already.

Penetrating Shot (Su): At 7th level, the master of Intuitive Archery can ignore the first 5 points of DR that is negated by any special material type. Special materials described in the DMG include cold iron, silver and adamantine; others may exist at the DM's option.

True Seeing (Su): At 8th level, the master of Intuitive Archery can see through the veils of illusion, deception and darkness that would confound lesser creatures. She can use true seeing for a total of one minute per class level per day, as a cleric of her class level; this use does not have to be consecutive rounds. This is a supernatural ability that requires a standard action to activate.

Soul Strike (Su): At 9th level, even the merest graze from an arrow fired by the master of Intuitive Archery can be lethal. On a successful attack using her mastery ability, she can inflict 2d6 points of temporary Constitution damage in addition to her normal damage. A successful Fortitude save (DC 10 + the master's class level + her Wisdom modifier) halves the Constitution damage. This ability is usable once per day.

Grand Mastery: A master of Intuitive Archery who reaches 10th level is a grand master of the school. She is no longer limited in the number of times per day she can use her mastery ability.

Ex-Masters

A master of Intuitive Archery who violates the alignment prerequisites retains her extraordinary special abilities from this class, but loses her supernatural ones. She can also no longer gain levels in this class.
