Villain Class: Relentless Harrier

The relentless harrier class represents a hybrid of a dextrous fighter and a brawny warrior that relies on speed and mobility. It is more flexible than the armoured reaver or swift assassin classes, and can be used for opponents in between those two extremes. A variant of the relentless harrier is the skirmish archer, which places more emphasis on ranged combat.

The class mechanics and concept are inspired by the Iron Heroes harrier.

The relentless harrier's CR is equal to his class level/HD. A class progression to 25th level is given below, to allow creation of powerful opponents for high-level parties. A relentless harrier gains a feat at 1st level, 3rd level and every 3 levels thereafter, just like any other humanoid creature.

Class Abilities

The following are the class abilities of the relentless harrier. All are extraordinary abilities unless otherwise noted.

Weapon and armour proficiency: The relentless harrier is proficient with all light and one-handed melee weapons, and all simple and martial ranged weapons. He is proficient with light armour and shields.

Fast Movement: The relentless harrier's speed is faster than the norm for his race by +10 feet. This applies only when he is wearing no armour, light armour or medium armour, and carrying no more than a medium load.

Combat Mobility: The relentless harrier gains a dodge bonus to AC equal to half his level, rounded down.

Dark-Hardened Spirit: The relentless harrier gains a resistance bonus to saves equal to half his level, rounded down.

Harrying Attack: The relentless harrier's combat style emphasises movement and quick attacks. If he moves at least 20 feet (4 squares) on his turn, he gains a +2 bonus to attacks and a +2 dodge bonus to AC. These bonuses last from the point at which he has moved 20 feet, to the end of his turn. Only regular movement counts for this ability; for example, a relentless harrier using a teleport spell or a swift-action maneuver does not gain the bonus.

At 8th level, these bonuses increase to a +4 bonus to attacks and a +4 dodge bonus to AC. At 16th level they increase to +6, and at 24th level to +10.

Bonus Feats: The relentless harrier gains a bonus feat at 4th, 12th and 20th level. He must meet the prerequisites for these feats.

Stances and maneuvers

The relentless harrier gains the listed number of stances and maneuvers per encounter. He can choose from any stance and maneuver from two of the following schools: Desert Wind, Diamond Mind, Iron Heart, Setting Sun and Tiger Claw (the schools must be selected beforehand). He can use any given maneuver only once per encounter, and he cannot recover spent maneuver slots (even with feats). If the relentless harrier knows more than one stance, he can switch between them as normal, but he cannot use more than his maximum number of stances per encounter.

The relentless harrier does not have to meet the usual prerequisites for choosing stances and maneuvers, nor does he have to select his stances and maneuvers known beforehand. Instead, he can use any stance or maneuver whose level is up to half his initiator level (rounded up). The relentless harrier's IL is equal to his class level. Thus, for example, a 9th level relentless harrier has 7 maneuver slots per encounter, and he can use any maneuver up to 5th level. It's possible for a relentless harrier to use different stances and maneuvers in subsequent encounters, if the PCs meet him more than once.

In addition to using maneuvers, the relentless harrier can also expend a maneuver slot to power one of the abilities listed below. Unlike actual maneuvers, the relentless harrier can use these abilities more than once per encounter, but each use consumes another slot.

Flurry of Blades: The relentless harrier can make a full attack as a standard action. This can be with melee or ranged attacks. He takes a -4 penalty on all attacks until the end of his turn.

Soul of Fire: As an immediate action, the relentless harrier gains SR equal to 10 + his level against one spell or spell-like ability that would affect him. This is a supernatural ability.

Skirmishing Defense: As an immediate action, the relentless harrier gains a dodge bonus equal to half his level against one attack. He must decide whether to use this ability before the attack is rolled.

Burst of Speed: As a swift action, the relentless harrier gains the benefit of a haste spell (+1 bonus to attacks, +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves, +30 ft speed) until the end of his turn. (This is still an extraordinary ability despite emulating a spell.)


Possessions

The relentless harrier is equipped with gear appropriate to a lightly-armoured combatant who specialises in agility. The following magic items are those commonly found on relentless harriers; others may be substituted at your discretion. You should be careful about giving the relentless harrier items that change his stats compared to the defaults; the class CR assumes the items below. The total value of the items should not vary significantly from the DMG guidelines for NPC equipment by level.

The relentless harrier wears a masterwork chain shirt initially, a mithral chain shirt from 6th level, and bracers of armor from 20th level. From 4th level, he has +1 armour and a +1 weapon; these bonuses increase to +2 at 8th level, +3 at 12th, +4 at 16th, +5 at 20th and +6 at 24th. The weapon can be any weapon that he is proficient with.

From 6th level he has a belt of giant Strength +2, which improves to +4 at 12th level, +6 at 18th and +8 at 24th. He has an amulet of health +2 from 7th level, which improves to +4 at 13th level, +6 at 19th and +8 at 25th. From 8th level he has gloves of Dexterity +2, which improve to +4 at 14th level and +6 at 20th level.


Variants

Skirmish Archer

Make the following changes:

Swift Volley: The skirmish archer can expend a maneuver to make a full ranged attack, a Celestial Rain strike, or a Diamond Arrow strike as a standard action instead of a full-round action. This is in addition to the maneuver required to use the strike itself. He takes a -4 penalty on all attacks until the end of his turn.
