Villain Class: Sorcerous Warrior

The sorcerous warrior class can be used to represent any human(oid) opponent who relies on spellcasting and weaponskill in equal measure. Such an opponent is tremendously flexible in combat, combining the best features of spellcasters and martial adepts. A variant of this class is the unhallowed warrior, who uses divine spells and has the ability to rebuke undead.

The sorcerous warrior's CR is equal to his class level/HD. A class progression to 25th level is given below, to allow creation of powerful opponents for high-level parties. An sorcerous warrior gains a feat at 1st level, 3rd level and every 3 levels thereafter, just like any other humanoid creature.

Class Abilities

The following are the class abilities of the sorcerous warrior.

Weapon and armour proficiency: The sorcerous warrior is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, and light armour. He is not proficient with shields.

Mystic Defense: The sorcerous warrior gains an insight bonus to AC equal to half his level. This is a spell-like effect and can be dispelled, but the sorcerous warrior can reactivate it on his turn as a standard action.

Mystic Shield: The sorcerous warrior gains a shield bonus to AC equal to one-quarter his level. This is a spell-like effect and can be dispelled, but the sorcerous warrior can reactivate it on his turn as a standard action. This is a force effect.

Arcane Resistance: The sorcerous warrior gains a resistance bonus to all saving throws equal to half his level, rounded down. This is a spell-like effect and can be dispelled, but the sorcerous warrior can reactivate it on his turn as a standard action.

Damage Reduction: From 16th level, the sorcerous warrior gains damage reduction 10/adamantine. This is a spell-like effect and can be dispelled, but the sorcerous warrior can reactivate it on his turn as a standard action.

Bonus Feats: At 4th, 12th 20th, and 24th level, the sorcerous warrior gains a bonus feat. He must meet the normal prerequisites for these feats. An sorcerous warrior is treated as always having spells available of the highest level he can cast, for the purpose of reserve feat effects.

Spellcasting

The sorcerous warrior has the ability to cast spells on the wizard/sorcerer spell list. His primary casting ability is Intelligence: to cast a spell, he must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level, and the save DCs for his spells are calculated as 10 + spell level + Int modifier. His caster level and initiator level (for maneuvers; see below) are both equal to his class level.

The sorcerous warrior gains a limited number of spell slots per encounter, as given in the table. A spell slot can be used to cast a spell of the given spell level or lower. Unlike other spellcasting classes, the sorcerous warrior does not gain additional spell slots from a high Intelligence score, nor are his slots limited on a daily basis. When casting a spell, he can cast any spell on his spell list; he does not have to prepare it or select it ahead of time as a known spell. The sorcerous warrior suffers from the arcane spell failure chance from wearing a shield, or medium or heavy armour (he can cast spells without difficulty in light armour).

For the purpose of feats and other special abilities, the sorcerous warrior is treated as a caster who prepares spells: thus, for example, he does not require a full-round action to use metamagic feats.

In addition to casting spells, the sorcerous warrior can use spell slots to power the abilities listed below. A spell slot used to power a special ability is expended, and cannot be used to cast a spell. All of these are supernatural abilities.

Spell Shield: As an immediate action, the sorcerous warrior gains a deflection bonus to AC equal to 10 + the level of the slot used to power this ability. This lasts until the start of the sorcerous warrior's next turn.

Baleful Insight: As an immediate action, the sorcerous warrior gains an insight bonus to his next skill check equal to 10 + the level of the slot used to power this ability. The skill check must be made before the start of his next turn.

Nullify Magic: As an immediate action, the sorcerous warrior gains spell resistance equal to 10 + twice the level of the slot used to power this ability. This is effective against the next spell or spell-like effect that affects him.

Channeling Strike: As a swift action, the sorcerous warrior can expend a spell slot to increase his weapon damage. By channeling arcane energy into his weapon, he gains a +2 bonus to his attacks for the round. His first attack, if it hits, deals additional damage equal to 1d10 hit points per spell level of the slot expended. This applies to both ranged and melee weapon attacks (including unarmed strikes, but not spells or other types of attacks).

From 8th level, the sorcerous warrior's channeling strike does additional damage equal to 2d6 hit points per spell level of the slot expended.

Arcane Conversion: The sorcerous warrior can expend spell slots to use martial maneuvers. He must expend a spell slot of the maneuver's level, or higher. The maneuver's activation action remains the same.

The sorcerous warrior can use martial maneuvers from the Diamond Mind and Shadow Hand schools, plus one of the Desert Wind, Setting Sun, Stone Dragon or Tiger Claw schools (this school must be selected beforehand). He may not use this ability to enter a martial stance. See The Book of Nine Swords for more information on stances and maneuvers.


Possessions

The sorcerous warrior is equipped with gear appropriate to a lightly-armoured character equally adept at both spellcasting and skill at arms. The following magic items are those commonly found on sorcerous warriors; others may be substituted at your discretion. The total value of the sorcerous warrior's items should not vary significantly from the DMG guidelines for NPC equipment by level.

The sorcerous warrior wears a masterwork mithral chain shirt initially, a mithral breastplate from 6th level, and a mithral chain shirt from 12th level. From 4th level he has +1 armour and a +1 weapon; these bonuses increase to +2 at 8th level, +3 at 12th, +4 at 16th, +5 at 20th and +6 at 24th. The weapon can be any weapon that he is proficient with.

From 6th level the armoured reaver has gauntlets of ogre power +2. This becomes a belt of giant Strength +4 at 12th level, a belt +6 at 18th and a belt +8 at 24th. He has an amulet of health +2 from 7th level, which improves to +4 at 13th level, +6 at 19th and +8 at 25th. From 8th level he has a headband of intellect +2, which improves to +4 at 14th level, and +6 at 20th level.
