eldest son of Henry Meade Smythe: Richard Altamont Smythe (1838-1924) of Court-na-farrage, Co. Dublin. High Sheriff of Co. Louth 1871, sometime Captain of Salop Militia. m. 1869 (Dublin) Francis Anne Jane Bellingham (d. 1934) 4th daughter of Sir Alan Edward Bellingham, 3rd. Bt. - The 9 children of the marrriage were:

1. Agnes Elizabeth Smythe, b. 1870 d. 1957. m. 1/1899 William Dudley Saul Fletcher BD, (d. 1948) son of Reverend James Saul Fletcher of Bonmahon, Co. Waterford. There were two sons of the marriage.	2. Laura Frances Smythe, b. 1872 d. 1923. m. 7/1899 Leslie Wynne Edmunds MA (d. 1922) of Ballaghadareen, Co. Mayo and formerly of Edgbaston, Warwickshire. There were four daughters and one son of the marriage.
3. Alan Theodore Smythe, Captain, Royal Engineers b. 1873 d. 1941. m. 1903 Hon. Charlotte Anne Trench (d. 1947) She was the elder daughter of Hon. Frederick Sydney Clarke Trench and the sister of 3rd. Baron Ashdown. Their daughter: Kathleen Patricia Smythe b. 1908	4. Eudo Somerset Smythe, MD of Assam - b. 1875 d. 1937. m. 1897 Elizabeth James. Their daughter: Erica Smythe b 1898 m. 1922, Capt. Douglas Arthur Maxwell Herbert MC IA. There was one son and one daughter of the marriage.
5. Olive Mary Smythe, b. 1877 d. 1948 unmarried. 7. Muriel Smythe, b. 1883 died young. 8. Frances Victoria Lucy Smythe, b. 1885 d. 1969 m. 1905 Lt. Colonel Henry Eoghan O'Brien, DSO, (d. 1967) only child of Murrough John O'Brien. There was one son of the marriage.	6. Rupert Caesar Smythe, CMG (1919) DSO (1918) b. 1879 d. 1943, of Augher Castle, Augher, Co. Tyrone. Lt. Colonel, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. South Africa 1900-02, Great War 1914-18 (despatches). Retired 1930. m. 1914 Cécile Isobel Caroline Munn, elder daughter of Major Frederick Henry Munn DSO, of Moy, Co. Tyrone. Their son: Rupert Frederick Smythe b. 1916.
