Pedigree of the family of WASHINGTON of Washington
by G. H. de S. N. PLANTAGENET-HARRISON

After he had located the Layton pedigree, Barry Reid goes on to report - "I have prepared another descendants' chart, this time for the Washingtons of Washington - as P-H sees them. It shows the entry of John de LATON of West Laton (see that chart) and his wife, Alicia, daughter of Warin fil John de WASHINGTON, in about 1344.

P-H traces the Washingtons back to Torfin, son of Gospatric, Earl of Dunbar, who can be taken back a little further to and beyond Crinan "The Thane", Lay Abbot of Dunkeld, and father of Duncan I "The Gracious".

According to P-H, George Washington's line comes in - via the Washingtons of Lancaster and of Westmoreland - near the top (at Bonde son of Akray son of Bardulf through his son, Walter fil Bonde de WASHINGTON). P-H's detractors, however, don't come anywhere near them and seem to branch off at only four generations "above" George.

GenCircle's George Washington collected sites page has one which includes this comment: "Robert Washington's family was the senior branch of the Washington family of Hertburn. In 1399, they relocated to Westmoreland and later to Lancashire, Warwickshire, and Northamptonshire. Washington Old Hall, near Sunderland, is the ancestral home of the Washingtons, dating to the settlement there in the 1180's of William de Hertburn, known afterwards as William de Wessynton" ... and names the progenitor of George's family as William Fitzpatric De Hertburn De WASHINGTON.

Be all that as it may, the main question is whether or not P-H's other descendants' charts can be relied upon or how much of them can be relied upon, regardless of whether or not he is related to P-H's Washingtons of Washington. P-H's proof, as depicted in his numerous quotes from primary sources, looks pretty irresistible.

Why, then, do most of the "official" 'Genealogies of the Presidents' websites that I have seen disagree with him? I have no idea - although I have found some inconsistencies in some of P-H's information (but creating inconsistencies is pretty easy to do in genealogy and they do not necessarily condemn the rest of the work out of hand). From the Preface however, it would seem that P-H was a genealogist with attitude!"
