Gratitude is extended to Barry Reid, of Victoria in Australia for locating and providing this descendancy chart. Barry is a Smyth descendant from Alice Smyth who married (1718) the Rev. John Travers, (d. 1774) - Rector of Ballyloughloe, Co. Meath in Ireland. Alice Smyth was a daughter of Robert Smyth of Portlick Castle - which has its own dubious history ... to be found elsewhere on this site. Alice Smyth died in 1778.

As Barry Reid points out, the author of the original 1885 book from which the Layton line is extracted was a controversial figure in his time, claiming to have been fobbed off in his research efforts ... If Harrison's charts are accurate then it is probable that Jane Layton was a daughter of this marriage. Her future husband, Thomas Smyth, was born in about 1520 and their son, Thomas Smyth, was born in 1550. The latter married Margaret Lightfoot of West Clayton. In view of a future Smyth/Lascelles marriage, this would seem quite feasible. See also de Burgh at base of chart.
