Having waited about 9 years since the last time I saw Joe at the Metro in 1996 (see review below), I was primed for some serious surfing. As it had been so long since the last time Joe was here, he had a stack of additional tunes he could possibly play. He brought with him a revised band line up that included Jeff, Matt and Galen.
What can I say except 'WOW!' I was on the floor really close to the stage and I could see everything really clearly. Joe did not disappoint and the crowd was real loud and happy. Ok, now onto the fun stuff, some photos and the setlist.

Went back the following night and was mesmerised again. No surprise there! The set list didn't change from the night before, but the improv jams were all different and it was great to see that the night before wasn't some freaky fluke of nature...its Joe, of course it wasn't.
Metro, Sydney January 1996
I attended my first Joe Satriani concert at the Metro in Sydney in January of 1996 as a part of the Joe Satriani World Tour.
It was a dream come true for me, to see him play live.
Joe didn't disappoint either. I was about 8 metres from the edge of the stage, right in the middle at eye level. He was definitely on top of his game that night. His band, Jeff, Jonathan Mover and Stu were all great. Joe had a number of his guitars in the background, but he chose only to use his chrome boy guitar. In fact, I noticed that he was using 3 or 4 chrome boys (His guitar tech would tune up one of them for Joe to switch over to every 3 or 4 songs).
The Metro is a great little venue to watch a Satriani show. It was pretty intimate and, although a little crowded ( It was Joe's first Sydney show since the Flying World Tour back in 1990) I got the feeling I was witnessing something really special. Some of the songs that really got the place rocking were Flying, Summer Song, Luminous Flesh Giants and The Extremist. A personal fave, Moroccan Sunset, was fantastic. You're My World was really cool also.
Move over Joe, here comes STUUUUUUUUUUU !!!
I had heard that Stu Hamm was a phenomenal bass player (you only have to listen to some of Joe's stuff), but this solo performance was mind blowing. For a single performance, it just about stole the show. It sent people nuts. He intertwined the Peanuts theme with some classical bits and the American National Anthem. At various stages in the solo, he was using up to eight, count 'em, (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) fingers simultaneously !!!!-Bloody Hell !!! Amazing Stuff.
Back to Joe and the gang.
The next song that Joe played was Killer Bee Bop. This wasn't one of my favourite songs on the Joe Satriani CD, but in a live setting he seemed to make it work pretty well. The next tune, Down Down Down, is one of my favourites on the Joe Satriani CD and the live version that Joe played at the Metro was AWESOME. I loved this song-one of my personal favourites on the night.
The first encore was Surfing With The Alien. I noticed a few fans were crowd surfing in the first couple of rows, having a blast-as were we all. Joe then got everyone involved by getting us all to respond to his guitar playing hijinks through yelling back what he was playing. And to finish off the night Joe tore through a blistering version of SMF that left me wanting more. Oh well, maybe next time. I can't wait to see him play again. Hopefully, that will be soon.
I love the idea of the 'An Evening With..' concept with an intermission and a distinctive acoustic section. I'd love to see that brought down under.
So, until next time......
