The Students

In this part of the site, I hope to shed some light on some of Joe's many students. You will no doubt be familar with some of these players. See what you think.

Steve Vai

Steve Vai has been a long time friend and playing partner of Joe's, most notably on the numerous G3 tours that have been around the world since 1996. As a kid, Steve wanted to become a guitar player and so he found out that a guitar playing friend of his was getting lessons from this guy, Joe Satriani. He didn't have the money ($5) to afford Joe's lesson, so he went down with his friend and they chipped in $2.50 each for his lesson. Shall we say the rest is history!

Kirk Hammett - Metallica

A keen student of his instrument even today, Hammett followed his first 'Kill 'Em All' tour by taking lessons from Joe Satriani, and embarked upon a passage of guitar self-education that took in jazz, blues and classical styles. Indeed, education has always been Kirk's answer to potential burnout. After the marathon 'Black' album tour ended in 1993, he immediately went to the City College of San Francisco where he took classes, something he credits as the reason behind his reinvention as a guitarist on the 'Load' and 'Re-load' albums.

Charlie Hunter

Charlie picked up his first guitar when he was twelve years old for $7, and a few years later was taking lessons from Joe Satriani, who at that time was just another guitar teacher. "People can't believe that but I was just another Berkeley kid and every Berkeley kid took lessons from Joe Satriani. He must have had a hundred students. He's a great teacher."
