Shellharbour City group

Shellharbour City OWN was established in December 2000 and is now a great resource for women new to the area who might be housebound, lonely, or needing to make new friends.

Early on, the group recognised a need for some kind of structure, although we were all hesitant to become 'chief'. We decided to organise our group on the basis of shared responsibilities, fulfilling most members' expectations of informal, friendly get-togethers with opportunities to share experiences, ideas and interests. One of our members keeps us informed by producing a regular newssheet.

We have firmly established ourselves in a very comfortable room at the Warilla Women's Health Centre, where a procession of interesting guest speakers alternate with less formal afternoons and outings. Our guest speakers cover a wide range of topics as diverse as Money Management, Advocacy and any topic that benefits the health and wellbeing of women generally.

Our members enjoy regular outings to local and not-so-local places of interest. We try to make outings both interesting and educational. Recently, we have encouraged younger members to join our group and as a result of serious lobbying we seem to have been successful. In 2001, we were lucky to receive a government grant during International Year of the Volunteer to purchase a laptop computer for our group.
