CITIZENSHIP: JOHN HOWARD TAKES ANOTHER ONE NATION POLICY
Congratulations to John Howard for implementing another One Nation policy.
His announcement that applicants for citizenship or permanent residence will have to pass an English test, and a quiz on the Australian way of life, has been One Nation Policy for years.
The new policy is no doubt a response to the recent discussion paper on citizenship put out by his Undersecretary for Immigration, Andrew Robb. Hundreds of One Nation people sent submissions in to this, and what Howard has come up with is a significant part of what One Nation wanted, even to the part about having questions randomly generated from a database so that no-one could learn the answers beforehand and "fake it".
The important point is the tests will enable us to only give citizenship or residency status to the type of people we want to have in our country.
Labor and the Greenies oppose the policy because their aim, on the other hand, is to fill the country with the sort of people we don't want.
If the ALP had their way the only requirement for a new citizen would be the ability to sign a proxy voting form when numbers are needed to stack a pre-selection ballot.
If the Greenies had their way, with their plan for a globalized world, the concept of Australia having a defendable border would disappear altogether.
It only remains to be seen what penalties will be in place for people who are later found by their actions to have lied about their commitment and intentions when they undertook the citizenship test.
One Nation says the penalty should be a one way ticket back to where they came from.
